Liverpool Head & Neck Centre

The role of the Audiologist

Audiologists specialise in conditions of the ear and balance system.  We perform tests of hearing, middle ear pressure and function, the balance system, the auditory brainstem and central auditory regions.  This can help us to identify any problems caused by head and neck disease, or by the treatments for the disease.  We can then help to manage any problems that you might have with your hearing, tinnitus or balance.

How can we help?

  1. Monitoring your hearing

You may be referred for a hearing test at your appointment, if it is thought that your condition will affect your hearing, or if you are about to start chemo radiation treatment.

The most common hearing test will take approximately 20 minutes, and will be completed before you see the doctor on the day of your ENT appointment or if a decision has been made to start chemo radiation therapy.  It involves wearing a set of headphones and listening for some tones and beeps.  When you hear the tones, you press a button to indicate that you have heard it.  From this, we are able to assess your hearing at a range of different frequencies, and can monitor any changes in your hearing over time.

If this hearing test is unsuitable for you, then we can arrange alternative tests to check your hearing at a later date.

  1. Hearing aids

If your hearing levels are lower than normal, and you feel that it is affecting your day to day living, the Audiology team can fit hearing aids.  We fit modern digital behind the ear hearing aids that will be fitted with real ear measurements to your prescription.  We will then support and review you, making sure that your hearing aids are well maintained. We can also advise you about other assisted listening devices that may help at work or around the home.

  1. Tinnitus Support

If you are affected by tinnitus, our team of tinnitus specialists are able to assess your symptoms, and arrange an individualised care plan to help you understand and manage your tinnitus well.  Aintree also have a gold standard tinnitus support group, open to all without a referral.  Please see the Aintree Tinnitus Support Group website for the latest information about meetings.

  1.  Balance testing

We are able to test the balance system and identify any possible causes for balance problems.  We also work closely with specialist physiotherapists who are able to offer vestibular rehabilitation for balance problems.

How do I arrange an Audiology assessment?

If you feel that you need help from Audiology, whether it is related to your head and neck disease or not, you can discuss it at your hospital appointment with your specialist, and they can make a referral.  Otherwise, your GP is also able to refer you for an audiology assessment.

In Liverpool, there are Audiology departments located at Aintree hospital and Broadgreen hospital.
