New in the leading medical journal The Lancet: results from the phase 3 TORPEdO trial comparing proton therapy (IMPT) with standard radiotherapy (IMRT) for oropharyngeal cancer.
Led by Chief Investigator David Thomson, Honorary Clinical Professor at the Liverpool Head and Neck Centre, University of Liverpool, this UK-wide randomised study shows both approaches achieve similarly excellent outcomes - including quality of life, functional recovery, disease control, and survival.
These findings provide important evidence to guide treatment decisions and health system planning, highlighting that modern IMRT remains a highly effective standard of care.
