Driving the future of cancer imaging research at Clatterbridge
Under the leadership of Prof Abhishek Mahajan, The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is strengthening its imaging research capabilities with new funding from the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR).
The £63,257 award will support investment in high-performance radiology workstations and enhanced data infrastructure—key building blocks for delivering cutting-edge imaging research at scale.
Prof Mahajan, Consultant Radiologist and a leading figure in cancer imaging research, has been instrumental in advancing the Centre’s vision for a more digitally enabled research environment—where large, complex datasets from MRI, CT and PET scans can be processed, analysed and translated into clinical insight more efficiently.
“This investment is about more than hardware,” he said. “It’s about creating the infrastructure needed to deliver the next generation of imaging research—from advanced tumour analysis to AI-driven diagnostics.”
The new high-end workstation will enable more sophisticated analysis of imaging data, supporting a growing portfolio of academic and commercial trials. It will also play a central role in the development of CAN-I-AID, an ambitious multimodal imaging database led by Prof Mahajan to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence in cancer detection, treatment planning and outcomes research.
By investing in both computational power and data capability, Prof Mahajan and his team are positioning Clatterbridge at the forefront of imaging-intensive clinical research.
A clear step forward in building the infrastructure—and leadership—behind innovation in cancer care.
